Eating and Drinking in Sapporo

THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2007
Of course, a trip to Sapporo would not be complete without a trip to the Sapporo Beer Factory! Yes, Sapporo is in fact the home of the Sapporo brand beer. You can't see beer being made, but you can take a tour through the beer museum. There are also some restaurants on the premises that serve beer of course, and Jingus Kan (Japanese for "Genghis Khan"). Jingus Kan is like yaki niku, but with lamb. Plates of raw meat come to your table and you cook it on grills that are built into the table. Mongol conquerors never tasted so good...

SAPPORO BEER FACTORY Here's the original beer factory building.
Beer isn't made here anymore. Now, the building houses a museum and bar/cafe.

SELLING BEER Here I am, trying to be the next "Sapporo Girl." The posters behind me are old advertisements.

SAPPORO RAMEN One of the dishes that Sapporo is famous for is ramen. We tried it, but to tell the truth, it just tasted like normal ramen to us. In fact, we like our local ramen shop much better.

MILK TOWN, a.k.a. "Miruku Machi," is an adorable little cafe hidden away in one of the many tall buildings in downtown Sapporo. (Many thanks to Erin for playing the part of local tour guide.) But if you ever have the good fortune to wander into Milk Town, you will not be disappointed. I recommend ordering one of the dessert sets. It comes with a chilled mug of soft serve ice cream, 2 liqueurs of your choice, a cup of coffee, and a tiny homemade cookie. Wading through the overwhelming menu of liqueurs is a bit daunting (I recommend sakura or orange tequila) but it's all worth it in the end. The liqueurs come in adorable little glasses with adorable little spoons. Spoon the liqueur over your ice cream and enjoy. It's like ice cream sundaes for adults, and it's all so... cute.
