The Sapporo Yuki Matsuri not only includes snow sculptures, it includes ice sculptures as well. The ice sculptures weren't set up in the park with the snow sculptures, rather, they could be found in the fashionable shopping district of Susukino. Many of the ice sculptures resembled the kind you see at banquets... or the gluttonous "midnight buffet" on a cruise ship, but some of them were quite fun. Here are a few of my favorites below:
APOLOGIES ALL AROUND - As I mentioned in the previous post (Sapporo Yuki Matsuri) the sculptures this year were really taking a beating from the warm weather. I thought this sign was quite cute and quite Japanese in that it apologizes for the warm weather... something they have no control over. By the way, notice how the snowman on this sign is only made of two balls. In Japan, they always think of snowmen as having two balls, not three. My kids are always surprised when I draw tall, three-balled snowmen.
ICE HOUSE With a glass door and windows, it's an upgrade on the traditional igloo.
FROZEN AQUARIUM The idea for this sculpture is pretty simple, but I still got a kick out of seeing it. The fish are real by the way.
JUST CHILLIN'
At the end of day, you can even take a rest on an ice bench... in an ice house!
